DataBank's Minneapolis data center run on 100% RE

DataBank announced Aug. 4 that their MSP2 data center in Minneapolis, Minn., is now run on 100% renewable energy.

The data center provider achieved this milestone through an agreement with utility provider Dakota Electric Association, who will provide 100% of MSP2’s 6 MW of energy load over the next five years. The clean energy is being produced through wind sources provided by Great River Energy through Dakota Electric’s Wellspring Program.

"Green energy and sustainability are critical aspects of DataBank's Data Center Evolved™ strategy," Kevin Ooley, DataBank's President and CFO, said in a statement. "This milestone reached at our Minneapolis data center is a major step toward enhanced energy efficiency across DataBank's portfolio and a further example of how we enhance the data center experience for our customers."

DataBank also said that this agreement was pursued as a result of a request from a large enterprise software company, who is a client of theirs, seeking to lower their own environmental impact through the use of renewable energy. In order to increase the renewable energy in that company’s supply chain, DataBank completed this 100% renewable energy agreement that their other customers at the Minneapolis data center will also benefit from.

This is DataBank’s third location to be powered 100% with renewable energy, behind their IND1 and IND2 data center’s in Indianapolis.
