Carnival surpasses 2020 target with 29% emissions cut
Carnival Corporation announced Aug. 26 that they achieved a 29.1% reduction in carbon intensity in 2019 and are committed to a new goal of a 40% reduction by 2030 from a 2008 baseline.
The cruise operator first achieved their 2020 goal of a 25% intensity reduction in 2017 and has also been attempting to reduce the air emissions from their fleet. At the end of 2019, 77% of their fleet was equipped with Advanced Air Quality Systems, which remove nearly all sulfur from the exhaust.
The company first announced their 2020 sustainability goals in 2015, which focused on 10 key areas including carbon footprint, fleet air emissions, reducing waste generation, water use efficiency and building an inclusive workforce.
"At the core of our company-wide sustainability efforts are our top priorities as a corporation, which are compliance, environmental protection, and the health, safety and well-being of our guests, the communities we visit and our crew," Bill Burke, chief maritime officer for Carnival Corporation, said in a statement. "The annual sustainability report is critical to providing our stakeholders with a transparent view of our progress against key metrics and demonstrating our commitment to protecting the environment, supporting communities and being compliant everywhere we operate in the world. As we look toward the future, we will continue to innovate and invest in sustainable initiatives to support compliance and sustainable tourism."
Carnival intends to continue their use of liquified natural gas (LNG) by introducing the second LNG-powered ship into their global fleet. The company also announced a project researching fuel cell technology for the maritime industry and an agreement with Corvus Energy for the development of a battery storage system on a cruise ship to power the ship’s propulsion and operation for limited periods of time.
