Nespresso coffee to be fully carbon neutral by 2022
Nespresso announced Sept. 17 that they are committed to ensuring every cup of their coffee, for both at-home and professional customers, will be carbon neutral by 2022.
The coffee company achieved carbon neutrality in their Scope 1 and 2 business operations in 2017 and now plans to focus more on the emissions that come from Scope 3 sources, like supply chain and product life cycle. To achieve this new carbon neutrality goal, Nespresso will focus on the reduction of carbon emissions, planting trees in and around coffee farms where they source their coffee and through support and investment in offsetting projects.
More specifically, Nespresso will focus on reducing carbon emissions by pursuing 100% renewable energy in their cafes and using biogas in the manufacturing process, as well as expanding the circularity of Nespresso products and packaging.
"Climate change is a reality and our future depends on going further and faster on our sustainability commitments,” Nespresso CEO Guillaume Le Cunff said in a statement. “That is why we are accelerating our commitments to offer our consumers a way to drink a carbon neutral cup of coffee by 2022. A coffee, made from the finest and rarest beans, sustainably sourced. I truly believe that both our business and the coffee industry can be a force for good in the world by tackling this pressing issue.”
