Yum! Brands reaches 100% RE at global corporate offices
The parent company of restaurant chains such as KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell and The Habit Burger Grill achieved their target of using 100% renewable energy at their corporate U.S. offices by the end of 2020 and are on track to submit science-based emissions targets by the end of the year.
Yum! Brands, based in Louisville, Ky., met their energy goals at their corporate U.S. offices through a combination of REC purchases, PPAs and onsite projects. The company has also explored opportunities for onsite renewable energy at their restaurant locations around the world, as detailed in Yum! Brands’ 2019 sustainability report, “Recipe for Good,” which was released Sept. 30. In Australia, the report states, 12 restaurants use onsite solar generation with a total capacity of 279 kW.
The company also reported that they reduced greenhouse gas emissions 8.5% on a per-restaurant average since 2018, contributing to their 2025 goal of reducing energy and emissions 10% since 2017.
“As a global restaurant company, we can and must do more to unlock opportunities and make real and lasting change that will benefit our businesses and communities,” CEO David Gibbs, said in a statement. “To reflect the growing intersection of business and purpose, we recently integrated our Recipe for Growth – the guiding principles of our business strategy – with our Recipe for Good. This unified approach will help us better serve our employees, customers and communities when it comes to the issues they care about most.”
The process for establishing their science-based targets will follow four key steps: determining their emissions footprint, developing an emissions reduction target, identifying emissions reduction initiatives and creating a roadmap and management plan for achieving those targets.
