New Jersey promotes efficiency incentives for businesses

New Jersey businesses could soon have 80% of costs covered for energy efficiency upgrades through a new program advertised by the state’s Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU).

The NJBPU launched Oct. 7 a public education campaign dubbed “Lighting the Way to a Clean Energy Future” targeted at businesses, homeowners and renters in the state. Part of the campaign includes educating business owners on the New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program’s (NJCEP) Direct Install program, which would cover a majority of the costs of efficiency upgrades in commercial facilities. The program also offers a free energy assessment to determine eligibility for projects like replacing lighting, HVAC and other operational equipment with high-efficiency alternatives.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused financial strain among many New Jerseyans, but the incentives available from New Jersey’s Clean Energy Program can help residents lower their energy bills at a time when extra support is needed,” NJBPU President Joseph L. Fiordaliso said in a statement. “These initiatives can also decrease energy use and reduce greenhouse gas emissions while increasing the demand for labor in our green economy. Thanks to Governor Murphy’s continued commitment to 100 percent clean energy by 2050, New Jersey has an opportunity to capitalize on the economic benefits and job growth opportunities that stem from clean energy, which is especially important as we look to put people back to work.”

The clean energy campaign also seeks to inform residents on the various rebates and financial incentives available to them, such as rebates for purchasing ENERGY STAR models of home appliances or energy-efficient heating and cooling systems. The program offers other incentives like free lighting, heating or cooling upgrades to low-income residents and bonus incentives to eligible residents for installing energy-efficiency heating, cooling and insulation upgrades themselves.
