FIFA World Cup headquarters receives sustainability certification
FIFA World Cup 2022 celebrated a list of energy efficiency achievements within its network, including the Al Janoub Stadium and the FIFA World Cup 2022 headquarters in Doha achieving sustainable building certifications.
The FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar in 2022, where the event's headquarters was the first office building in the country to receive such a sustainability certification. Other achievements celebrated by the organization include its establishment of the first voluntary carbon-offsetting program in the region and the completion of the Doha Metro network, which will reduce road congestion and air pollution.
“It’s fantastic to be able to share the progress that Qatar and FIFA have made across the many critical sustainability projects connected to the delivery of the FIFA World Cup,” Bodour Al-Meer, SC Sustainability & Environment Senior Manager, said in a statement. “Sustainability remains at the core of our infrastructure and tournament operational planning, and by delivering a fully carbon neutral FIFA World Cup through these various initiatives, we hope to set new standards for sustainable mega event hosting and cement one of Qatar 2022’s most profound legacies.”
In addition to achieving its target sustainable building certification for design and build and exceeding its targeted sustainable construction management certification, the Al Janoub Stadium is now fully operational. The event headquarters achieved its own certification based on energy conservation items like the selection, installation and commissioning of efficient lighting, cooling and ventilation systems.
