lululemon athletica aims for 100% RE by next year
lululemon athletica announced Oct. 28 that it is committed to sourcing 100% renewable electricity for its operations by 2021 and reducing carbon emissions across its global supply chain by 60% per unit of value added by 2030.
This was the athletic apparel company’s first-ever Impact Agenda detailing its long-term sustainability strategy, in which it detailed its plan to achieve its energy and emissions goals through RECs and VPPAs and by engaging manufacturing partners for energy efficiency and renewable energy progress. lululemon athletica also plans on ensuring at least 75% of its products are made with sustainable materials and offering new options for customers to extend the life of its products through reselling, repairing or recycling options by 2025.
“lululemon has a unique opportunity, responsibility and platform to drive meaningful change. We share our Impact strategy against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, a global climate crisis, and systemic inequities in our society,” CEO Calvin McDonald said in a statement. “As a global brand, industry, and as individuals, we must play a part to change the world for the better.”
The company created science-based targets that were approved by the Science Based Targets initiative while forming these goals. lululemon athletica is also targeting a reduction in its greenhouse gas emissions intensity across its global supply chain by 60% before 2030, based on a 2018 baseline.
lululemon athletica joined the RE100 initiative and has also implemented onsite efficiency projects such as LED retrofits in support of its climate targets.
