Eastman Chemical releases 2030 carbon neutrality target

Eastman announced Dec. 1 that it is committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and is aligning its targets with the Paris Agreement.

In the interim, the materials company is committed to reducing absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by one-third before 2030.

Eastman is also striving to create products that enable energy savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions throughout its value chain and at the consumer level. Starting in 2021, Eastman plans to focus on gaining a comprehensive understanding of its downstream Scope 3 footprint

“Our sustainability strategy builds on the progress we achieved in pursuit of our previous targets,” CEO Mark Costa said in a statement. “We have gained crucial insights into how sustainability paired with innovation will drive our transformation to a specialty materials company, and we are committed to advancing both environmental and social practices across our corporation and within our communities, reporting our progress annually.”

In addition to its emissions goals, Eastman is pursuing the creation of a circular economy and is committing to recycling more than 500 million pounds of plastic waste annually via molecular recycling technologies by 2030. In the interim, the company is pursuing a goal of recycling more than 250 million pounds of plastic waste annually through these technologies by 2025.
