CMC Steel receives power from 100 MW Arizona solar project
Commercial Metals Company announced Dec. 16 that its micro mill in Mesa, Ariz., is officially receiving renewable energy from a nearby 100 MW solar project.
The CMC Steel Arizona mill is receiving the energy from Salt River Project, which owns the Saint Solar plant in Coolidge, Ariz. CMC Steel Arizona was one of the original customers to join the first phase of SRP’s Sustainable Energy program, which was announced in 2018.
“Our participation in the Saint Solar project underscores our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint further through the use of renewable energy as well as producing steel from 100% recycled scrap metal and being an industry leader in the sustainable steelmaking process,” Tracy Porter, CMC Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said in a statement.
The Arizona steel mill has been following sustainable business practices for years and has Scope 1 emissions and energy consumption nearly eight times less than the global steelmaking average. The CMC Steel Arizona mill was constructed in 2009 and uses scrap-based Electric Arc Furnace technology to reduce its need for natural resources.
CMC announced plans in August to build its third micro mill adjacent to CMC Steel Arizona and that the mill will produce merchant bar quality products through a continuous-continuous production process. The mill will also feature technology that allows CMC to have a direct connection between the Electric Arc Furnace and Ladle Furnace technology to renewable energy sources to rescue electricity transmission losses.
