Intel sources clean energy from 100 MW solar facility

Intel Corporation announced Dec. 21 that it is now receiving clean energy from a new 100 MW solar facility in Arizona to power a local tech manufacturing plant.

The East Line Solar project was unveiled by Salt River Project and will provide power to Intel’s Ocotillo Campus in Chandler, Ariz., one of Intel’s largest and most advanced semiconductor manufacturing sites globally. The project was first initiated by SRP’s Sustainable Energy Offering and is now owned and operated by sPower, which will merge with ARS’ clean energy business in the U.S. early next year.

“Intel is excited for East Line Solar to deliver green, renewable electricity to our Ocotillo facility in Chandler. This collaboration, which supplies nearly 50 percent of our current peak hour requirements, supports our advanced high-tech manufacturing,” Marty Sedler, Intel Director of Global Utilities and Infrastructure, said in a statement. “Intel is proud to extend our commitment to sustainability in Arizona.”

The 100 MW solar farm is located in Coolidge, Ariz., and is expected to yield $10 million over the next 25 years in tax revenue as it provides clean power to Intel, Arizona’s largest manufacturer.

East Line Solar is one of three new Arizona solar projects by SRP as part of its Phase One and Phase Two Sustainable Energy Offering. SRP has announced 33 companies that signed up to receive around 300 MW of solar energy from these three projects, which is expected to offset 1.6 million tons of CO2.

These projects also contribute to SRP’s goal of adding 1,000 MW of new utility-scale solar by the end of fiscal year 2025 and its target to reduce carbon intensity 65% by 2035 and 90% by 2050.
