Chicago's McCormick Place to use 100% clean energy

The McCormick Place convention facility in Chicago will soon be using 100% renewable electricity through a new agreement that was completed March 11.

Chicago’s Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority (MPEA) entered into a three-year partnership with Dynegy, which will guarantee the renewable electricity to the facility through the use of renewable energy credits to offset its energy use. The agreement follows other sustainability projects recently implemented at McCormick Place, including an LED retrofit in the outdoor spaces and parking lots to save energy and reduce maintenance costs. These efforts are funded by Dynegy’s GreenBack program, which offsets the cost of energy efficiency improvements.

“Dynegy understands that MPEA has the distinction of operating North America's largest convention center and has to balance sustainability efforts with cost effectiveness to ensure truly great experiences for McCormick Place guests,” Gabe Castro, senior vice president of business markets for Dynegy, said in a statement. “We are pleased to deliver a solution that provides both. Our company is proud to power a true Chicago landmark and global destination, which welcomes millions of visitors every year."

Other large facilities in Chicago receive their power from Dynegy, including Willis Tower, the Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field.
