U.S. Steel Corporation’s New Target: Net Zero by 2050

Building on its existing goal to eliminate 20% of its global carbon footprint by 2030, U.S. Steel Corporation announced that it plans to become fully carbon-neutral by 2050.

To accomplish this net-zero goal, U. S. Steel will continue to grow its fleet of electric arc furnaces (EAF) and its carbon capture programs. Other steps include expanding its current use of direct reduced iron and clean energy. The company also recently acquired Big River Steel, the only U.S. LEED® certified steel mill, and joined ResponsibleSteel™ this month as the initiative’s first North American steel company. Its new sustainable high-strength steel product line, verdeX™, only requires 25% of the carbon intensity usually needed to manufacture similar products.

“Climate change is a global crisis that requires a global response. Today, by announcing our net-zero goal, U. S. Steel is committing to doing our part to support the U.N. Paris Agreement on climate change to achieve global carbon neutrality by 2050.” said U. S. Steel President and Chief Executive Officer David B. Burritt in a statement. “With our 120-year history of innovating to solve any challenge, U. S. Steel intends to be a part of the climate solution. Climate change is the challenge of this generation and doing our part is a core component of our ‘Best for All’ strategy for profitable growth.”
