Walmart Continues Move Toward 100% Renewable Energy

Walmart announced on April 29 that more than 500 MW of new renewable generation capacity are now operational through a collaboration with ENGIE North America. Three separate wind projects will supply energy to hundreds of Walmart stores, clubs, and distribution centers in Texas, South Dakota, and Oklahoma.

Mark Vanderhelm, Walmart’s VP of Energy and Facilities Management, said in a note,  “Doing what’s right for the future of our planet means making major change. That’s why we are investing in the technologies of tomorrow, today – so each step toward our goal prioritizes renewable, restorative operations.”

In September 2020, Walmart announced its commitment to become a regenerative company powered by 100% renewable energy in its operations by 2035.

“Bringing this amount of renewable energy online represents an important leap forward on our renewable energy journey, reinforcing Walmart’s broader mission to spark collective climate action and drive environmental sustainability,” said Vanderhelm.

In 2020, renewable sources contributed 36% of Walmart’s global electricity needs. Since 2008,  the company is responsible for bringing more than three gigawatts of new renewable energy capacity to the grid. Solar also plays a part in Walmart’s renewable energy power. In 2019, Walmart added the most solar of any company in the U.S. Walmart also encourages its suppliers to take action through Project Gigaton, the company’s initiative to avoid a gigaton of GHG emissions from its global supply chain by 2030.
