Lilly Announces Carbon Neutrality Goal
To celebrate Eli Lilly’s 145th anniversary, the medical company has committed to Scope 1 and 2 carbon neutrality - including the use of 100% renewable energy - by 2030. This target builds on its 2020 success of reducing GHG emissions intensity by 22.2% (compared to 2012).
As part of this process, Lilly will provide more transparency for its environmental initiatives. The company is adopting standard ESG reporting frameworks from both the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures. The company’s website has also launched a new ESG portal, which shares information on its climate-related record and efforts.
"Lilly has a proud history of sustainability, but today, more than ever, we believe performance in these areas is central to our overall success," said Lilly's Senior Advisor for ESG strategy, Jim Greffet, in a statement. "Greater transparency is a mandate for all businesses and we are excited to implement standard ESG frameworks to report on our progress."
"Sustainability, which flows directly from our purpose and core values, is integral to everything we do at Lilly and we are keenly aware that how we work is just as important as what we do," added David A. Ricks, Lilly Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "While this focus is not new, we are redoubling our efforts—increasing our investment in sustainability, setting new goals and communicating our progress in new ways to all of our stakeholders who want to learn more."
