University of New Mexico Adds New EV Charging Stations
The University of New Mexico will soon be tripling the electric vehicle parking spaces available on its campus through a new initiative by the Facilities Management Department (FM) and Parking & Transportation Services (PATS).
The project will include the installation of four dual-port charging stations, increasing the total number on campus to 12. The New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) awarded $64,000 for the project in June 2020, while the remaining $36,000 will come from the Sustainability Surcharge collected by FM’s Utility customer fees.
The funds from NMED for the project were made available through the 2016 Volkswagen settlement between Volkswagen and the US EPA.
“The cost and process to convert to more sustainable infrastructure are extraordinary,” Mary Clark, manager of the Office of Sustainability and FM Recycling Services, said in a statement. “But whether it be through adding charging stations, the installation of new solar arrays, or programs that optimize energy efficiency in our buildings, FM is finding ways to help reduce UNM’s carbon footprint despite the state’s limited resources.”
The installations are expected to be completed sometime this month. The new locations will be listed for use on the ChargePoint and PlugShare websites.
