Burberry Becomes First Luxury Brand to Pledge Climate Positive by 2040
Burberry announced June 10 that it is expanding on its net-zero target and is now aiming to be climate positive by 2040.
To achieve this goal, the luxury brand will focus on climate efforts in its supply chain, including reducing extended supply chain emissions by 46% by 2030 and helping others achieve their own carbon goals. Burberry had previously committed to being net-zero by 2040 and now intends to reach carbon neutrality in its own operations by 2022.
Currently, the brand uses 93% renewable energy and plans to reach 100% by 2022.
“Burberry was built upon a desire to explore nature and the great outdoors and they have remained our inspiration for more than 150 years,” CEO Marco Gobbetti said in a statement. “Drawing on this heritage of exploration and driven by our creative spirit, today, we are setting a bold new ambition: to become climate positive by 2040. As a company, we are united by our passion for being a force for good in the world. By strengthening our commitment to sustainability, we are going further in helping protect our planet for generations to come.”
Other projects that Burberry will work on include low-carbon solutions and the investment of nature-based projects that restore and protect natural ecosystems. Burberry plans to focus on advocating for a sustainability transformation within the fashion industry.
The Burberry Regeneration Fund was established in 2020 and supports carbon offsetting and insetting projects to store and offset carbon, promote biodiversity and support the restoration of ecosystems.
