Medline Industries Installs Largest Commercial Solar Rooftop in Massachusetts

Medline Industries, a manufacturer and distributor of medical supplies, announced June 22 that it is planning 6.7 MWdc of rooftop solar for its distribution facility in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. The installation is expected to generate an estimated 8 million kWh of clean energy annually as the largest commercial rooftop solar project in the state once complete.

The solar array is the latest example of Medline’s dedication to investing in healthcare and its communities while lessening its environmental footprint.

“The Uxbridge rooftop solar array is another example of Medline investing in state-of-the-art technology and clean energy,” Medline president of global operations Bill Abington said in a statement. “It is important for Medline to remain at the forefront of clean energy and energy efficiency in operating our vast network of distribution and manufacturing facilities.”

Medline’s 800,000 square-foot Uxbridge Distribution Center will house nearly 16,000 solar panels on its extensive roof, generating renewable energy with environmental benefits equivalent to planting 93,000 trees or powering more than 800 homes annually according to estimates provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The system will export the energy generated onsite to the local utility, supplying the grid with renewable energy.

Commercial solar developer EnterSolar will install the project, one of nine rooftop solar installations at Medline’s facilities for a total investment of $33.3 million and solar projects planned through 2022. Medline’s environmental commitment also includes having 94% of its distribution center space operating as LEED-certified, investments in energy-efficient vehicles, and its ReNewal division that reprocesses medical devices saving more than 1 million pounds of medical waste from ending up in landfills just last year.
