UNFI Invests in North Carolina Solar Project
United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) is investing in a 108.5 MW solar facility soon to be constructed in North Carolina.
While the wholesale foods company will not receive any energy or RECs generated by the project, the Trent River solar facility will generate enough energy to power more than 14,000 homes. UNFI's investment will support Pine Gate Renewable's construction of the 640-acre project in collaboration with U.S. Bank.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to sponsor Trent River Solar and are pleased to work with Pine Gate Renewables and U.S. Bank to bring this project to life to create local clean energy and jobs,” Steven L. Spinner, chairman and CEO of UNFI, said in a statement. “UNFI has work ahead of us to reduce our emissions and we look forward to applying knowledge learned from this project to our pursuits of climate action.”
Pine Gate currently manages 770 MW of utility-scale solar and storage sites through the U.S. and has raised over $2 billion in capital to date to fund these projects. UNFI’s participation in the Trent River projects continues its previous work to support the implementation of renewable energy projects, including the addition of more than 50 all-electric transport refrigerated trailer units to a fleet in California.
