DHL Signs On for World's First All-Electric Cargo Plane

DHL Express announced Aug. 3 that it will be purchasing 12 of the world’s first fully-electric aircraft models to add to its e-cargo fleet.

The Alice eCargo plane model was developed by Seattle’s Eviation and should be delivered to DHL Express for use in its delivery operations in 2024. This purchase will substantially support DHL’s goal of reaching zero emissions by 2050.

The Alice aircraft can carry 2,600 pounds and will require 30 minutes or less to charge per flight hour with a range of up to 440 nautical miles. Another benefit of the aircraft will be its reduced quantity of parts, increasing its reliability and reducing its maintenance costs.

DPDHL Group is investing 7 billion euros by 2030 into the reduction of its carbon emissions. In particular, the company will support the electrification of last-mile delivery, sustainable aviation fuels and climate-neutral buildings.

“We firmly believe in a future with zero-emission logistics,” John Pearson, CEO of DHL Express, said in a statement. “Therefore, our investments always follow the objective of improving our carbon footprint. On our way to clean logistics operations, the electrification of every transport mode plays a crucial role and will significantly contribute to our overall sustainability goal of zero emissions.”
