MedTrans Adds Fully-Electric Semi Truck to Delivery Route
Medline announced Aug. 25 that its private truck fleet, MedTrans, has deployed a fully electric semi truck for hospital deliveries in Southern California.
The Volvo VNR Electric truck was developed through a project between Volvo Trucks and 12 other organizations focused on deploying battery-electric trucks and equipment in the marketplace. MedTrans launched its use of the VNR Electric through a pilot program with Volvo Trucks in addition to four other pilot vehicles making regular deliveries.
“This electric truck initiative is exciting, important and reflects MedTrans’ ongoing efforts to improve the efficiency of our fleet operations, with the ultimate goal of protecting the environment and helping our partners to do the same,” Jeff Brennan, Medline’s outbound vice president of transportation, said in a statement.
The partnership allows MedTrans and Volvo Trucks to monitor truck diagnostics and operating metrics, such as battery life, driving range and charge station requirements. Volvo Trucks is then able to use that data to continue improving the technology.
The use of this electric truck is the latest development in MedTrans’ plans to reduce its transportation emissions and optimize its operations. The organization has implemented a route optimization system to reduce miles driven, limits truck speed to maximize fuel use and aims to purchase the most efficient diesel heavy-duty trucks that emit nearly zero emissions.
