Darling Ingredients Targets 5% Energy Intensity Cut
Darling Ingredients released Sept. 1 its newest ESG report with an update on its ongoing target to reduce its energy intensity by 5% from 2020 to 2025.
A main way for the food manufacturer to decrease its carbon emissions is its continued production of renewable diesel. The company expects to achieve a more than 150% increase in renewable fuel production in 2022 from 2019. The use of its renewable diesel by customers already avoided 2.5 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions 2020 compared to conventional diesel use.
Darling plans to continue increasing the use of renewable energy at its facilities as it pursues net-zero emissions within its own operations by 2050. One facility in Belgium already increased its renewable electricity production capacity by 30% between 2019 and 2020.
“We see ourselves as part of the solution with our circular business model of repurposing the world's agri-food waste streams into valuable, sustainable ingredients all while assisting in the decarbonization of the planet,” Randall C. Stuewe, chairman and CEO of Darling Ingredients, said in a statement. “We have a responsibility for generations to come and our climate goals identified today will help secure a pathway and provide us a continual platform to build on for many years into the future.”
