Ontex Begins Work on Italy's Largest Onsite Solar Project
Ontex began construction Sept. 14 on what will be Italy’s largest onsite solar power installation.
The solar project will be located at its consumer goods factory in Ortona, Italy and generate 11.6 GWh of electricity per year. Since 2017, Ontex has already powered its factories in Italy and eight other European countries with 100% renewable energy and plans to continue its development of onsite generation projects in Europe and the Americas.
“As demand for sustainably produced electricity is expected to increase, we prefer to have direct access to electricity that is produced on-site in a sustainable way,” Annick De Poorter, Ontex’s executive vice president for R&D and Sustainability, said in a statement. “We can now produce more than a quarter of the electricity we need to manufacture essential hygiene goods at our factory in Italy. This is another step towards our goal to have carbon neutral operations by 2030. We will reach this goal through on-site renewable energy production, energy savings, purchasing energy from renewable sources, and carbon offsets via reforestation projects.”
The project was developed and financed by Menapy and construction on the project is expected to last six months. It should be completed at the beginning of 2022 and begin generating electricity for use in the factory by the spring.
In addition to onsite generation, Ontex also purchases Energy Attribute Certificates to cover its energy use.
