Google Leads New 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Compact

A global compact to accelerate the transition to a carbon-free electricity sector was launched Sept. 24 by founding members Google and SEforALL.

The 24/7 Carbon-free Energy Compact was created in partnership with the UN Energy alongside other founding members The AES Corporation, Orsted, EDP, the city of Des Moines, Iowa, the government of Iceland, and others.

SEforALL and Google are calling on companies, governments and other stakeholders to join the Compact ahead of the COP26 Conference in November. The Compact includes a set of actions that can be taken to transition to 24/7 carbon-free energy, starting with hourly decarbonization of local and regional grids.

It is estimated that electricity accounts for 25% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. Switching to a clean electricity-based economy has the potential to significantly address global emissions.

“Tackling climate change requires government and business to work together with urgency and focus,” Google CFO Ruth Porat said in a statement. “The Compact is the first collective action group to bring together companies, national and local governments, and other stakeholders to drive innovation and investment in 24/7 carbon-free electricity grids, and we are hopeful that it will facilitate significant progress. Time is not on our side-- we need to act now-- and we look forward to others joining with Google in our efforts.”
