Caltech Completes 800 kW of Solar Installations
The installation of a combined 800 kW of solar energy capacity was recently completed across eight campus buildings for the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).
The rooftop solar arrays were built on the Bechtel Residence, Bridge, Downs Luritsen, Hameetman, Keith Spalding, Parsons Gates, South Mud and Synchrotron buildings and will allow the university to maximize its energy production during peak demand time. The project was funded and will be owned and operated by Standard Solar, while developed in partnership with EMCOR Services Mesa Energy.
The solar system is expected to generate approximately 1,328 MWh of electricity in the first year of operation. Seven of the eight systems are now operating, while the final one is awaiting final utility permission to operate.
“This project represents the culmination of a decade-long vision to build out rooftop solar across the Caltech campus,” Maximilian Christman, Caltech sustainability manager, said in a statement. “Our campus in Pasadena now hosts 2 megawatts of onsite solar capacity, furthering our efforts towards carbon reduction and eventually carbon neutrality.”
