Kraft Heinz Publishes Update on 15% Energy Use Reduction Target
The Kraft Heinz Company announced Oct. 14, along with its new ESG report, that it reduced energy use intensity by 2.2% and greenhouse gas intensity by 3.4% between 2019 and 2020.
In 2020, Heinz established manufacturing targets for 2025 including a 15% decrease in energy intensity. It is also on track to achieve its goal of procuring a majority of its electricity from renewable sources by 2025.
However, the company failed to meet a previously set 2020 target to reduce emissions and energy use by 15% compared to 2015 levels. During that time, Heinz decreased its energy use by 2.69%, while emissions decreased by 8.56%, compared to 2015.
The company has pursued energy reductions in its manufacturing by targeting items like boiler efficiency, air compressor systems, chiller efficiency, LED lighting or replacing low-efficiency equipment. Overall, its highest levels of emissions come from Scope 3 activities and Kraft Heinz says it is pursuing initiatives and partnerships that will help reduce these emissions in its supply chain.
The company renewed its commitment to set a science-based target by 2023 in line with the Science Based Targets initiative and has publicly disclosed the entirety of its value chain emissions.
“Our 2021 ESG Report serves as a testament to our approximately 38,000 global employees who went above and beyond to support our communities and each other during 2020,” Kraft Heinz CEO Miguel Patricio said in a statement. “We are committed to holding ourselves to a higher standard, stepping up to the plate to boldly address the environmental and societal challenges we face today and those that lie ahead.”
