GM Launches Plan to Install 40,000 Community EV Chargers in North America
General Motors announced Oct. 26 a new initiative to install up to 40,000 community electric vehicle chargers across the U.S. and Canada.
The automaker plans to work with its dealers to deploy Level 2 chargers at key locations in their communities through the Dealer Community Charging Program. These locations will include workplaces, multi-unit dwellings, sports and entertainment venues and colleges and universities, with a particular focus placed on underserved, rural and urban areas with limited EV charging access.
The initiative will begin in 2022 and is part of GM’s $750 million effort to expand home, workplace and public charging infrastructure. The chargers will also be available to all public EV owners, not just owners of GM vehicles.
The charging infrastructure expansion will coincide with the launch of GM’s new line of three Ultium Level 2 smart charging stations.
“These two initiatives are part of our plan to put everyone in an EV, making access to charging even more seamless than before,” GM President Mark Reuss said in a statement. “We want to give customers the right tools and access to charging where and when they need it, while working with our dealer network to accelerate the expansion of accessible charging throughout the U.S. and Canada, including in underserved, rural and urban areas.”
