Michelin Joins Race to Zero Campaign
Michelin announced Oct. 27 that it has signed the “Business Ambition for 1.5 °C” and joined the “Race to Zero” by committing to carbon neutrality by 2050.
The tire manufacturer also signed the “We Mean Business” coalition open letter to the G20 leaders urging swift climate action in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. This would mean increasing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to be in line with the targets of decreasing emissions 50% by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2050.
Its climate strategy plan, which was released in April, is also compatible with its commitment to the “Business Ambition for 1.5 °C”. The company will submit these targets to the Science Based Targets initiative for approval in 2022.
The strategy for reaching its climate goals focuses on four areas: reducing operational, manufacturing and value chain emissions, adapting to climate risks, advocating for transportation decarbonization through a global carbon pricing system and increasing emissions transparency.
The company achieved its first net-zero emissions production site with the Les Gravanches site which now uses a heat pump to recover heat from the manufacturing process to meet its heating needs. The site powers its other operations with renewable energy.
