T-Mobile Reaches 100% RE Use

T-Mobile announced Jan. 31 that it achieved its goal of being the first U.S. wireless provider to source 100% of its total electricity usage from renewable sources by the end of 2021.

The phone carrier sourced enough wind and solar energy to meet all of its electricity needs through the end of 2021 from a combination of clean energy investments, including eight VPPAs, 19 retail agreements, one Green Direct program, and unbundled RECs for projects across the country. The nine wind and solar projects from the VPPAs and Green Direct program alone provided T-Mobile with approximately 3.4 million MWh of clean energy annually.

“T-Mobile put a stake in the ground as the first telecom to commit to going all in on renewable energy by the end of 2021, and now we’re the first to hit this milestone years ahead of others,” CEO Mike Sievert said in a statement. “This was no easy task, but we set a goal and we achieved it. Today, thanks to amazing efforts from a team who was unwavering in our commitment to reduce our impact on the planet, the Un-carrier is powering America’s largest, fastest and most reliable 5G network with 100% clean electricity.”

The company also contributed to its RE100 goal by supporting 37 community solar projects, representing more than 2.1 million MWh over 25 years to be supplied to local energy grids in Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and Oregon.

The company now plans to add more renewable energy projects to its portfolio to cover future electricity usage and pursue investments in onsite solar and community clean energy projects.

T-Mobile has further supported its energy transformation with efficiency projects that include smart thermostats, ENERGY STAR certified LED lighting in retail stores, upgrading mechanical and electrical systems, optimizing air management to keep equipment cool, and installing energy-efficient radio equipment.
