Google, C40 Launch Carbon-Free Energy for Cities Program  

C40 and Google are launching a new 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy for Cities program to empower cities worldwide to run entirely on clean energy daily.

Google is supporting this program by sharing best practices from its decarbonization journey, data and technology, and providing funding of $900,000.

This support will enable London, Copenhagen and Paris to develop and implement innovative approaches to decarbonize their energy use while creating scalable models for other cities around the world to do the same. More than half of the world’s population lives in cities, and urban areas are responsible for more than two-thirds of global energy consumption and more than 70% of global carbon emissions. 

Pursuing 24/7 CFE means aiming to meet every kilowatt-hour of electricity consumption with carbon-free sources. C40’s 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy for Cities program will develop and implement high-impact strategies, practices and tools to enable cities to achieve 24/7 CFE, and support cities seeking to lead in the energy transition.

We look forward to working with the cities involved in today’s announcement to implement the principles of 24/7 carbon-free energy, which have been shown to enable deeper and more rapid electricity-related carbon reductions than other approaches.”
