Radisson Blu Installs New Carbon Capture System
Radisson Blu Mall of America, part of Choice Hotels International, Inc., announced it installed a new carbon-capture technology unit, known as CarbinX™.
According to the announcement, it's the first hotel in the world to use this system to capture greenhouse gas emissions. Radisson completed the installation as part of a program by CenterPoint Energy, Minnesota’s largest natural gas utility, which enables participants to explore the possibilities of new, cleaner energy technologies.
In a statement, Alberto Abreu, General Manager of Radisson Blu Mall of America, stated that hospitality stewardship is crucial to climate protection: "We are thrilled to be leading the way to the future of hospitality stewardship. We at Radisson Blu Mall of America and Choice Hotels International are committed to being part of the climate change solution, and we are proud to be a leader in the industry as the first hotel in the world to install a CarbinX unit. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with CenterPoint Energy and CleanO2 to demonstrate the success of CarbinX in this setting, and we're extremely optimistic about the impact this technology can make."
The CarbinX device connects directly to the flue of the hotel’s natural gas water heating equipment, capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) and converting it to a nontoxic carbonate powder called pearl ash. CleanO2, CarbinX’s manufacturer, collects the pearl ash and recycles it for use in commercial products such as soaps and detergents.
With the CarbinX unit, Radisson Blu expects to achieve both energy and cost savings because the unit recycles heat, thereby increasing efficiency in the water heating system.
This installation demonstrates Choice Hotels' dedication to strengthening sustainability in the lodging industry while driving financial returns and lower costs for owners.
