Boeing’s Decarbonization Ambitions Take Flight

Boeing, a global aerospace company, unveiled its efforts to advance environmental stewardship, such as increased renewable energy use, the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for commercial operations, and significant investments in aerospace technologies to reduce fuel use and emissions.

The company made key accomplishments, including the purchase of two million gallons (7.6 million liters) of SAF for Boeing's commercial airplane operations. It also achieved 35% renewable electricity use across the company in 2022 by purchasing renewable energy credits (RECs), an increase of 21% since 2021.

Its facilities prioritize energy efficiency, with the use of multiple design elements, including efficient ventilation systems, LED lighting, and solar power generation. Boeing will continue to invest in conservation and renewable energy projects.

Boeing plans to maintain a net-zero future through sustainable operations, by achieving a 55% absolute reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG from the 2017 base year; maintaining net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2; achieving 100% renewable electricity; achieving 100% SAF compatibility for commercial airplanes; and building its first zero-emission, electric, autonomous aircraft.

Boeing launched the Boeing Cascade Climate Impact Model, a data-modeling tool that quantifies strategies to reduce aviation emissions. This tool enables it to explore decarbonization pathways and forecast how each can impact aviation emissions through 2050.

Additionally, Boeing was selected by NASA to develop and test flight a full-scale Transonic Truss-Braced Wing Sustainable Flight Demonstrator airplane.

The company celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Boeing ecoDemonstrator program, which has assessed 230 technologies to reduce fuel use and emissions. This program tested 30 new technologies to help decarbonize aviation on Boeing's 777-200 test bed.
