Applied Materials Reduces the Semiconductor Industry's Carbon Footprint
Applied Materials, a company specializing in materials engineering solutions, achieved significant carbon reductions through the use of 100% renewable electricity in the U.S. and 69% globally, which resulted in a 3% reduction from its 2019 baseline in the company’s Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions.
The company announced it is dedicated to doubling down on its commitments and has submitted its targets for Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, encompassing the entire value chain, to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Additionally, it set a goal to reduce its Scope 3 emissions across new semiconductor products by 55% by 2030, from the 2019 baseline.
“Applied Materials is at the forefront of semiconductor technologies that play an ever-increasing role in our lives,” said Gary Dickerson, President and CEO of Applied Materials, in a statement. “As we bring transformative new innovations to market, we are working closely with our suppliers and customers to minimize our environmental impact by reducing our products’ resource consumption and carbon emissions. We are also continuing our strong commitment to a culture of inclusion at Applied where everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute and grow in their careers.”
The company is expanding its use of renewable electricity, including onsite solar installations and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). Through its VPPA with White Mesa Wind, it achieved its goal of being fully powered by renewable electricity. It also participates in green utility programs and purchases Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
The company is focused on driving global demand for renewable electricity across the industry to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future. To achieve this goal, it is collaborating with key customers and participating in industry coalitions. Specifically, Applied Materials is a founding member and governing council member of the Semiconductor Climate Consortium as well as a member of imec’s Sustainable Semiconductor Technologies and Systems Program, the RE100, and the Clean Energy Buyers Alliance.
Highlights are detailed in its Sustainability Report.
