Google's Project Green Light Reduces Emissions
Google’s research initiative Green Light found road transportation emissions can be lowered by optimizing traffic light plans.
Green Light uses artificial intelligence and Google Maps driving trends to model traffic patterns and make recommendations for optimizing existing traffic light plans, wrote Yossi Matias, VP, Engineering and Research, in a blog post.
City engineers can implement the traffic light changes in just five minutes, using existing infrastructure to coordinate across several adjacent intersections to create waves of green lights. This change would improve traffic flow and lower stop-and-go emissions.
Urban GHG emissions can be 29 times higher at city intersections compared to open roads. Google’s project so far has shown potential for up to a 30% reduction in stops and up to a 10% reduction in emissions at intersections.
Several cities have participated in Green Light, and other cities will be able to participate in the future. The project is now live in 70 intersections in 12 cities including Haifa, Rio de Janeiro and Bangalore.
