Mississippi State U Adds Solar Project
Mississippi State University added a solar facility on its campus in addition to other projects to lower its emissions.
The project is located on a four-acre field - the 3,420 solar panel installation will produce about 2.4 million kilowatt hours of energy annually, creating 2,400 average Renewable Energy Credits or RECs, according to an announcement.
When the solar panels are connected with LED and other retrofit projects, the university estimates it will save $885,000 annually.
Mississippi State University will also receive savings of $265,000 when it receives a rebate incentive from the Tennessee Valley Authority.
Clean energy generation consists of 45% of the entire carbon reduction goal for the campus, said Saunders Ramsey, executive director of MSU’s Campus Services.
Lighting and equipment retrofits account for the second highest category and make up 20% of the goal.
The solar modules and upgrades will allow the university to lower its carbon emissions by a 7,548 metric ton annual carbon reduction and save a total of 10,784,865 kilowatt hours of energy annually.
