Warrior Met Coal Lowers Emissions by 13%
Warrior Met Coal, a supplier to the global steel industry, achieved a 13% reduction in total Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, plus a 16% reduction in methane emissions as compared to the 2021 baseline.
The company is a large-scale, low-cost producer and exporter of premium quality metallurgical coal, also known as hard-coking coal (HCC). It performs efficient longwall operations in underground mines in Alabama and reported 69% of the methane from its mines’ emissions were captured in 2022 for beneficial use.
Warrior Met Coal also destroys methane and converts it to a greenhouse gas (GHG) that has a lower global warming potential and optimizes its operational plans to reduce GHG emissions.
Through the development of the Blue Creek Mine and the Mine 4 North reserves, the company plans on encountering less methane in the remaining reserves to ensure a reduction in emissions.
Details were published in its 2023 sustainability report.
“At Warrior we are fully committed to being a responsible corporate citizen to our employees, customers, communities, and other stakeholders,” said Walt Scheller, CEO of Warrior Met Coal, in a statement. “Operating as one of the world’s largest producers of premium quality steelmaking coal, we understand our responsibility to produce our products in a sustainable manner.
