Bimbo Bakeries USA Premieres Six Onsite Microgrids
Bimbo Bakeries USA has implemented onsite microgrids at six of their sites in California, which will provide nearly 20% of the company’s energy usage and save an estimated 1,700 CO2e tons per year. The microgrid includes solar arrays with battery storage.
The six California bakeries were chosen from among the company’s 60 locations based on their energy intensity, increasing utility electricity costs, and highest decarbonization impact. These sites are located in Montebello, Placentia, Oxnard, San Luis Obispo, South San Francisco and Sacramento. Future deployment of onsite microgrids is being considered for additional locations.
GreenStruxure designed and built the microgrid system as part of an Energy Services Agreement; they will also operate and maintain the system.
In addition to lowering the company’s overall carbon footprint, Kevin Yavari, Bimbo Bakeries USA’s Senior Manager of Corporate Sustainability, said in a statement, “Our new microgrid systems will help contribute to California’s efforts to expand the use of renewable energy in the State. We support the state’s clean energy mission and will continue to look for ways we can back these efforts.”
