Zimmer Biomet Lowers Emissions by 7%

Zimmer Biomet Holdings, Inc., a global medical technology company, made progress toward reaching its SBTi-approved goals of reducing carbon emissions.

The company lowered its 2023 Scope 1 and 2 (market-based) carbon emissions by more than 7% from its 2022 levels and already surpassed its 2030 commitment by reducing 56% of its Scope 1 and 2 (market-based) carbon emissions.

Zimmer Biomet continues to leverage the virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) that was negotiated in 2021 with the large-scale solar farm Prospero II. In 2023, the solar farm produced over 163,000 MWh of clean electricity, which equates to more than 72,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions and represents almost 60% of renewable energy for Zimmer Biomet’s 2023 Scope 2 (market-based) GHG emissions.

The company continues to pursue renewable energy opportunities globally and has outfitted all major manufacturing and distribution sites with LED lighting. In 2023, its two Ireland manufacturing sites installed nearly 5,000 solar panels on the rooftops of both locations, an installation that is estimated to generate 1.3 megawatts of electricity and offset 1.1 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually.

As published in its 2023 Sustainability Report — which provides an overview of the company's environmental, social and governance (ESG) program, progress, and accomplishments — Zimmer Biomet is working with suppliers to increase transparency and improve environmental performance.

The report outlines Zimmer Biomet's formal commitment with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to reach net zero GHG emissions by 2050 and aligns with the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) framework and the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

"I am incredibly proud of the progress we made this year in advancing sustainability initiatives across all facets of our business,” said Ivan Tornos, President and CEO of Zimmer Biomet, in a statement. “From reducing our carbon footprint and minimizing waste to increasing engagement within our workforce, we have achieved key milestones that demonstrate accountability and growth. Our Sustainability Report serves as a roadmap for our ongoing efforts to deliver value for our patients, customers and team members."
