Standard Motor Products Sets 2030 Goals

Standard Motor Products, Inc. (SMP), a manufacturer and distributor of premium replacement parts in the automotive aftermarket, announced it plans to make reductions in Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions.

The company set goals to reduce its total Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 25% compared to its 2019 baseline year by 2030. By 2040, the company seeks to lower its total Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions by 67% compared to the baseline year.

By 2050, Standard Motor Products plans to achieve carbon neutrality in total Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions across the  company. 

To reach its goals, the company introduced environmental management systems to more accurately capture and track Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG emissions and engaged a renewable energy consultant to study its footprint and develop a roadmap to achieve the GHG emissions reduction goals. 

SMP's Scope 1 GHG emissions are direct emissions resulting primarily from the company's consumption of natural gas at its facilities and the consumption of fuel by its vehicle fleet, while its Scope 2 GHG emissions are indirect emissions resulting primarily from the company’s consumption of purchased electricity and purchased heat and steam at its facilities.

"SMP continues to enhance our sustainability efforts, and we remain committed to our initiatives to ensure positive sustainability change within our organization and all the communities in which we operate,” said Eric Sills, Chairman and CEO of SMP, in a statement.

As announced in its 2023 Corporate Sustainability Report, the company will also develop  additional powertrain-neutral safety and electrical products for the vehicles, including battery electric and hybrid electric vehicles.
