City of Azusa Adds 8 Wind Turbines
The City of Azusa inaugurated the operation of eight new wind turbines in North Palm Springs, California, which expands the City’s current clean energy capacity.
The Mesa RP30 Wind Energy Center will generate up to 30 megawatts (MW) of wind power, supplying approximately half of Azusa’s energy needs under a 25-year agreement with renewable energy company, Brookfield Renewable.
The turbines will replace over 400 older turbines with advanced Vestas models and are taller and more efficient with longer blades that increase electricity production even in low wind conditions.
“This project is a great example of how evolving technologies can help meet our growing energy needs locally in Azusa,” said Azusa Mayor Robert Gonzales in a statement. “Our aim through these efforts is to increase capacity, reduce our carbon footprint, and save customers money in the long-term.”
The new wind project supports Azusa’s environmental sustainability goals and meets California’s renewable and zero-carbon energy mix requirement by December 31, 2045, as mandated by Senate Bill 100.
The City’s renewable energy mix also includes solar and hydroelectric generation.
Azusa is a community of about 50,000 residents that is nestled against the San Gabriel Mountain foothills in the County of Los Angeles.
