Chevron Phillips Chemical Identifies Emission Reduction Opportunities

Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) announced its identification of over 350 potential carbon reduction opportunities.

During 2023, the chemical manufacturer continued its pursuit of CPChem’s 2030 aspirational goal to lower its carbon intensity by 15% compared to a 2020 baseline.

In the last year, CPChem teams completed intensive marginal abatement cost curve assessments at five CPChem facilities. The critical process was used to develop site-specific strategies to reduce emissions and optimize energy efficiencies.

In addition, CPChem advanced initiatives dedicated to exploring renewable energy and uncovering opportunities to further the industry’s transition to a lower carbon future.

CPChem announced that the pathways to reducing emissions include the following:

  • Electrification of combustion and steam-driven equipment
  • Adoption of emerging technologies
  • Enhancements in equipment efficiency
  • Utilization of lower carbon fuels
  • Optimization of processes and flaring activities
  • Procurement of renewable electricity

Details were published in its 2023 Sustainability Report, a comprehensive document prepared in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative Standards that showcases the company’s efforts and notable achievements in its journey to advance sustainability.

“The stories featured in the 2023 report illustrate CPChem’s strides in advancing sustainability over the past year,” said Steve Prusak, CPChem’s president and CEO, in a statement. “We believe infusing ESG efforts within CPChem’s foundational elements like award-winning safety performance and a diverse employee culture can enrich our sustainability strategy and prime our business to perform in all business climates.”
