Kinder Morgan’s Emissions Fall by 8%
Kinder Morgan, Inc. announced the reduction of absolute methane emissions by 8% from 2021.
In 2023, the energy infrastructure company’s methane emission intensity rate was approximately 90% lower than the target and 93% lower than the 2012 transmission and storage industry segment rate of 0.45%.
As detailed in its 2023 Sustainability Report, in 2023, KMI established a cross-functional working group to focus on identifying and evaluating additional GHG emissions reduction opportunities across its operations.
The 2023 report includes enhanced disclosure regarding methane emission measurement and detection technologies, the company’s GHG emission reduction strategy and its practices to foster diversity among its suppliers and the leadership team.
“We continue to take steps to align our business operations with sustainability and diversity initiatives that add value,” said KMI’s Chief Operating Officer James Holland in a statement. “We are pleased to report on our continued progress, as well as a number of new metrics, and we were fortunate to have Amy Chronis join KMI’s board of directors earlier this year with her notable financial, leadership and sustainability expertise.”
KMI's management team annually reviews, reassesses and discusses with its board the feasibility of setting medium- and long-term GHG reduction targets for its operations.
While KMI is committed to continue seeking economic opportunities to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions, it believes that any GHG emission reduction targets established need to be reasonably achievable through actions within its control using currently available and economic technology.
At present, the company does not believe that existing technology and economic circumstances allow it to set reliable and meaningful medium- and long-term GHG reduction targets and instead focused its near-term reduction efforts on minimizing methane emissions from its operations.
