Apple Lowers iPhone Emissions
Apple announced that its two new phones are being manufactured with over 30% of electricity sourced from supplier low-carbon energy projects and with over 30% recycled content.
The iPhone manufacturer announced that it lowered emissions for iPhone 16 Plus with 128 GB by 30% against its business-as-usual scenario as modeled by the company, according to an announcement.
Since the device contains more than 30% recycled content, including 85% recycled aluminum in the enclosure, there was a reduction of total product emissions by about 8%.
Apple is also working with its suppliers to transition to 100% low-carbon electricity for Apple production. The low-carbon electricity solutions that suppliers have already implemented to date have reduced product emissions by 20%. In the carbon footprint calculations, the company also accounts for the emissions necessary to generate low-carbon electricity, specifically to manufacture and maintain renewable energy infrastructure like wind and solar farms.
The company also announced that iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus use at least 60% less energy than the energy efficiency standard. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus use software and power-efficient components that manage power consumption. To address emissions tied to the electricity the products use, Apple is building low-carbon energy projects and engaging with customers to educate and provide opportunities to support the decarbonization of the grid.
