Illinois State University’s Arena Receives LED Upgrade
Illinois State University’s CEFCU Arena concourse underwent a significant lighting upgrade, resulting in more energy-efficient operations.
The $120,000 renovation project included the replacement of 80 outdated sodium vapor light fixtures with LED lights at the arena. These new fixtures consume approximately 68% less electricity than the old lights, which were originally installed over 35 years ago.
“The experience within the arena is improved, we’re saving money on energy costs and we’re contributing to the university’s sustainability goals,” said Jeri Beggs, interim director of athletics, in a statement.
The project is a step toward achieving the sustainability goals outlined in the university’s strategic plan. The installation of the LED lights supports Section III, Energy Goal A of the plan, which commits to reducing university-wide energy consumption and GHG emissions.
Outdated light control panels in the arena were also replaced, which added to the system's efficiency. This is aligned with Energy Goal B of the Sustainability Strategic Plan, which focuses on improving campus lighting efficiency by implementing LED technology across the University.
Illinois State has been systematically replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lights across the campus for several years in an effort to lower energy consumption and GHG gas emissions.
The project is expected to pay for itself in just over two years through the energy savings generated by the new lighting. The arena is home to the university’s men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball competitions.
