Amazon Signs 476 MW of PPAs in Portugal, Spain

Amazon signed renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) for an additional 476 megawatts (MW).

The new agreements with clean energy company Iberdrola include Amazon’s first PPA in Portugal for 219 MW from the Tâmega Wind Complex, the largest wind farm in Portugal, which is scheduled to begin construction in early 2025. The partnership also expanded into Spain, with two utility-scale PPAs agreed for a total 257 MW of solar and wind energy. The three projects are equivalent to 1,093 GWh of carbon-free electricity per year.

Iberdrola and Amazon extended their partnership, which was originally signed in 2022 for renewable energy PPAs and cloud services. The new agreement enables both parties to collaborate on additional projects in existing and new markets.

In total, Amazon has contracted over 66,000 GWh of renewable energy from Iberdrola worldwide over the lifetime of all signed PPA agreements.

In detail, the new PPA agreements include:

  • 219 MW has been contracted by Amazon at the Tâmega Wind Complex. It is the largest green hybridization project in the country, designed to make efficient use of the grid connection point already built at the Tâmega hydroelectric complex.
  • Amazon will purchase 212 MW capacity at the Ciudad Rodrigo solar PV plant in Salamanca, in Western Spain.
  • Additionally, the output from 45 MW from the Valdemoro wind farm located in the province of Burgos will be purchased. With an installed capacity of 49.5 MW, capable of supplying the equivalent of 48,000 households, the project is made up of eleven wind turbines with a height of 107.5 meters and a rotor diameter of 145 meters. During peak construction, the project will support 145 jobs with around 40% drawn from local contractors.

The commitment to securing renewable energy PPAs helps Amazon match the electricity consumed by its operations with 100% renewable energy as part of its goal to reach net-zero carbon emissions across its operations by 2040. With more than 600 solar and wind projects globally, Amazon is the world's largest corporate purchaser of renewable energy, according to Bloomberg NEF for the fifth year running.

“Amazon is committed to driving the carbon-free energy transition forward, both to advance our Climate Pledge goals, and support Europe's transition to more sustainable energy sources,” said Lindsay McQuade, Director of Energy for EMEA at Amazon, in a statement
