Cemex Lowers Emissions by 15%
Cement producer Cemex achieved significant progress in profitable decarbonization by reducing Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 15% and about 17%, respectively, compared to 2020.
The company announced a 33% reduction in specific net CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious product compared to a 1990 baseline, a 37% alternative fuel substitution rate, and 36% clean electricity consumption in its cement plants.
Cemex also launched “Project Cutting Edge”, a three-year, US$350 million saving initiative to streamline operations and improve efficiency, heavily leveraging digital technology throughout the company.
The company is setting aggressive decarbonization goals with a very specific roadmap to achieve them and working with external partners to validate and endorse its commitments. The company estimates it will invest ~US$150 million annually to achieve its 2030 CO2 targets.
Based on current emissions levels, Cemex is well on its way to reach its 2025 and 2030 CO2 emissions targets.
The company’s 2030 goals include the following:
Scope 1 Goals
- 47% less of CO2 per ton of cementitious product
- 41% less of carbon content in concrete
Scope 2 Goals
- 58% reduction in CO2 emissions per ton of cementitious product
New Scope 3 Goals
- 25% reduction in CO2 per ton of purchased clinker and cement
- 30% reduction in transport emissions
- 40% reduction of Scope 3 emissions per ton of purchased fuels
- 42% reduction in absolute Scope 3 emissions from the use of traded fuels
"I am proud of our achievements this year, as it marks a pivotal moment in the corporate transformation we envisioned in 2020,” said Fernando A. González, CEO of Cemex, in a statement.
