Duke Energy, citing commitment to clean energy, plans upgrades to Indiana hydro facility

Citing a renewed commitment to clean energy, Duke Energy's Indiana utility is planning upgrades to  its Markland Hydro Station near Florence, Ind., along the Ohio River.

Duke Energy Indiana has requested approval of the project — which will modernize, replace and upgrade three hydroelectric turbines, generators and related equipment at the site — from the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission. If approved, work on the project could begin around mid-2016 and conclude by mid-2020.

"The generating units at Markland Hydro have served our customers well with clean, renewable energy since 1967," Melody Birmingham-Byrd, president of Duke Energy Indiana, said in a March 24 news release. "As we move toward increasingly cleaner energy, these modernized generation units will harness more of the renewable resources of the Ohio River for many years to come."

Duke Energy Indiana's operations provide about 7,500 MW of owned electric capacity to approximately 810,000 customers in a 23,000-square-mile service area, making it Indiana's largest electric supplier, according to the release.
