IKEA to complement solar with fuel cell systems at 4 California stores
Following the success of an initial fuel cell system at one of its San Francisco area stores, IKEA on July 13 announced plans to install additional systems at four other California stores.
The home furnishings retailer plans to expand its biogas-powered fuel cell portfolio to 1.3 MW with a system at its other San Francisco-area store, in East Palo Alto, as well as three stores in Southern California, according to a news release. Pending permits, the Bloom Energy fuel cells will be installed, commissioned and operational by this fall, complementing solar arrays already atop each of the four stores.
The original fuel cell system was installed at IKEA's store in Emeryville, Calif., about a year ago.
"Based on the success of the system installed last year in Emeryville, we are excited about further increasing our renewable portfolio with four more fuel cell projects,” IKEA U.S. President Lars Petersson said in a statement. "Fuel cells represent another way we can contribute to our goal of generating renewable energy equal to the amount of power we consume worldwide.”
IKEA has big sustainability goals that include its use of renewable energy: The company is aiming to be energy independent by 2020. The Swedish company also recently announced the installation of three electric vehicle charging stations at its new Las Vegas store.
