'Part deux' of Tesla's master plan includes solar, semi trucks, mass transit
A decade after Elon Musk wrote out his "master plan" for Tesla, the CEO has penned 'part deux' of that plan, outlining a future that goes far beyond the integration of solar-plus-storage into the automaker's business model.
Posted on Tesla's website July 20, the addendum reads more like a manifesto than a business plan but makes clear Musk's broad vision for the company's next decade of operations, firmly centered around sustainability:
The point of all this was, and remains, accelerating the advent of sustainable energy, so that we can imagine far into the future and life is still good. That's what "sustainable" means. It's not some silly, hippy thing -- it matters for everyone. By definition, we must at some point achieve a sustainable energy economy or we will run out of fossil fuels to burn and civilization will collapse. Given that we must get off fossil fuels anyway and that virtually all scientists agree that dramatically increasing atmospheric and oceanic carbon levels is insane, the faster we achieve sustainability, the better.
Tesla's plan to "make that day come sooner" centers around four main objectives it vows to tackle: integrate energy generation and storage; expand to cover the major forms of terrestrial transport; automated driving; and car sharing. You can read the entire post on Tesla's website.
Musk's post arrived in the wake of Tesla's plan to acquire its sister solar company, SolarCity, which garnered mixed reactions from shareholders and the broader market, and news that a driver of its Model S vehicle was killed while operating the vehicle with its autopilot, or self-driving, feature engaged.
