29% of Owens Corning's grid-purchased power came from renewables in 2015
Owens Corning reports that 29% of the power it purchased from the grid in 2015 came from renewable sources, up from 18% in 2014.
Owens Corning, which develops, manufactures and markets insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites, said July 28 that it entered into PPAs for 250 MW of wind energy capacity in 2015. Construction of that generation, the company noted, will also use significant Owens Corning glass-reinforced composites.
The update on its progress in cleaning up its carbon footprint came alongside the release of Owens Corning's 2015 sustainability report.
"At Owens Corning, renewable energy has been fundamental in enabling sustainable business operations," the company said in the report. "Even though a majority of our indirect energy demands are currently fulfilled by non-renewable sources, we have made progress in saving energy by installing renewable energy sources in several of our plants."
The report, which is available on the company's website, also outlines — in great detail — Owens Corning's progress in energy efficiency: In 2015, the company implemented more than 70 programs, generating energy savings for approximately 92,000 MWH per year. Those projects included lighting retrofits, compressed air optimization, cooling tower upgrades, pump and process optimizations and biomass conversions.
