Southern Power buys 3rd Oklahoma wind project

Continuing on its clean power acquisition binge, Southern Co. subsidiary Southern Power on Aug. 29 announced its purchase of a 147-MW wind facility from Apex Clean Energy.

The Great Plains wind facility in Oklahoma marks Southern Power's third wind project purchase in the state, building on a portfolio that includes the adjacent 151-MW Grant Wind facility and the 299-MW Kay Wind facility. All three facilities were purchased from Apex and feature Siemens turbines.

The announcement comes as power and utility companies continue to ramp up their renewable energy generation supplies amid growing demand from large power customers.

"The acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility is an important step in strategically growing our renewable energy portfolio," Southern Power President and CEO Buzz Miller said in a news release announcing the deal. "This project aligns with our business model and underscores our commitment to developing wind generation."

Southern Power said in the release that Grant Plains fits its business strategy of growing its wholesale business through the acquisition and construction of generating assets substantially covered by long-term contracts.
